Martial arts have a unique way of capturing the imagination, and for many, it begins with the thrilling performances of iconic figures like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Bruce Lee. Their incredible skills and captivating stories inspired countless individuals, including myself, to dream of stepping into the ring or dojo. However, my journey into the world of martial arts was not as straightforward as I had hoped. Growing up in a family of four children, my parents faced financial constraints that made it difficult to afford martial arts classes. Additionally, the opportunities available back then were limited compared to what aspiring martial artists have today.

It wasn’t until I turned 21 that I finally took the plunge and attended my first martial arts class. The moment I stepped onto the mat, I felt an exhilarating rush. The energy, the discipline, and the camaraderie among fellow students ignited a passion within me that I had longed for since childhood. After three years of dedicated training, I proudly earned my first Black Belt, 1st Dan in kickboxing. It was a significant milestone, but as is often the case, achieving a goal can sometimes lead to a sense of stagnation.

After receiving my Black Belt, I found myself at a crossroads. The initial thrill of training began to wane as I struggled to find new challenges and a structured program for Black Belts. This led to a year-long hiatus from training, a period of reflection where I pondered my next steps. However, the fire within me was reignited, and I was determined to return to the mat.

I discovered the Lee Matthews Black Belt Academy, a place that would become instrumental in my martial arts journey. Under the guidance of skilled instructors and surrounded by passionate students, I trained rigorously for another two years. This dedication paid off when I achieved my Black Belt once again, this time in a different discipline.

With my newfound expertise, I transitioned from student to teacher at the Lee Matthews Black Belt Academy. It was a rewarding experience to share my knowledge and passion with others, and I worked my way up to the position of Senior Instructor and Manager at the main academy in Tweedale, Telford. Today, I proudly hold the rank of 3rd Dan in both Sport Karate and Kickboxing.

Throughout my time at the academy, I have had the privilege of teaching and mentoring hundreds of students, ranging from young children as young as four to adults of all ages. My classes span across various locations, including Telford, Codsall, Shifnal, and Albrighton. Each student brings their own unique energy and enthusiasm, making every class a rewarding experience.

Martial arts are not just a sport for me; they are a passion that encompasses various disciplines. I enjoy training in MMA, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Wrestling, Karate, Muay Thai, and Kickboxing. Each discipline offers its own set of challenges and rewards, keeping my training fresh and exciting.

In addition to teaching, I have also competed at both national and international levels in Kickboxing and MMA. Recently, I achieved bronze and silver medals at the World Championships in MMA, a testament to the hard work and dedication I have poured into my training.

My journey in martial arts has been a rollercoaster of emotions, challenges, and triumphs. From a young dreamer inspired by cinematic legends to a seasoned instructor sharing my passion with others, I have learned that martial arts is not just about physical prowess; it is about discipline, respect, and the continuous pursuit of self-improvement. I look forward to what the future holds and to inspiring the next generation of martial artists.
